Flying Scenes?

Is the 2005 DVD missing scenes or does Varan really only fly that one time? It seems rather odd that they would reveal that Varan has the ability to glide through the air if it wasn't going to play a role later on in the film. It seemed like a pretty big introduction for something we wouldn't see again.

Then again, maybe it was just an excuse to give him a quick exit before he was supposed to disappear. Either way, it's odd that he only flies once.
