Great... from what I saw

I just watched the last hour of this movie. It is superb. No car chases. No Sci-fi. No shootings or stabbings. Just brilliant acting and dialogue.

I didn't see the beginning, but I stayed with it for a while and thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue. Interesting to see the pairing of these two. Initially, I couldn't see them together and when he slapped her so hard across the face, I said, that's the Robert Mitchum I know. Later on she slaps him so they are even. LOL What did she become sick from? Did she have an abortion? She said something about trapping him ! I missed a few things because I was doing some work and not watching every minute. Sometimes I miss commercials.

Her sickness might have been related to smoking. It is unique to see a movie on television without commercials. I liked it.

She said she had stomach problems due to an ulcer.

I love this movie..and agree that it is very sad, poignant, moving. The music and characterization all add to this sense of melancholy. You are left wondering whether the protagonists, especially Mitchum's character, will find happiness back in Nebraska..or will always regret losing Gittel.

And yet there is also a lot of great wit and humor in the movie.

And so I do not think it leaves you feeling down in the end, because both characters are such a pleasure to watch: intelligent, thoughtful, kind, unselfish, humane..

Does the American cinema still make films like this?

reply

Yes, and although it wasn't known at the time, the ulcer was likely caused by a bacterium. Because it wasn't known, this explains the chronic/recurring nature of the ulcer that they were unable to treat effectively.

I watched it ALL and I didn't get the end either!
