Insightful-a Brutal Business

Not a nice look at film making;

but that is where the fascination starts !

Big money,investors,has beens,pressure & deadlines.

E.G + Kirk are terrific and the rest of the cast gel fine.

Good music,attractive to look at visually and Cyd is something ELSE

...memorable:

Cyd as Carlotta(steamy,but calculating)

Clair as the bombastic,plotting and suspicious wife of

a wonderfully cast past-his-prime film maker played by Robinson;

Kirk is solid and stolid as Jack Andrus ~

While the movie may be about the process of film making, I think it could apply to other businesses as well. Even though they may deal with the same stresses, I hardly think everyone in the movie business could relate to the issues in the film on a personal basis. The problem with a lot of the characters is they have serious emotional issues and are emotional immature and unhealthy.

Jack was institutionalized for quite some time because his career was waning, his wife and supposed true love cheated on him and treated him badly and he thought he had issues with the director that had helped him find success. As he says he felt he needed these people and the life he lived but really he did not. Once he got it once and for all, he was fine and, as we see, planned to continue working in that same industry.

The difference between who will cope and who will not cope with stress is in how the person is able to process and handle the stress. It has a lot to do with their sense of self-worth, resilience, and mental fortitude. Perhaps the entertainment industry attracts certain types so there may be more insecure, needy people in it who seek applause, fame, love, escape but people who lack the traits I mentioned before, like a strong sense of self-worth, resilience, and mental strength, will tend to have problems in whatever industry they find themselves. Those types are probably more prone to jealousy, caring what random people think of them, and comparing themselves to others.

I LIKE the application and the spill over into other fields.. life, work, love

intersects through into other facets of 'the human comedy.'

What does it show us though that wasn't already on display in The Bad And The Beautiful with a much greater complexity, in considerably richer detail? One sort of suspects Two Weeks must have already seemed somewhat trite when it came out. It certainly wasn't a good idea to devote most of the film's running time to the soap-operatic romantic shenanigans occurring between several rather uninteresting, underdeveloped characters. The ending does achieve a rather ferocious momentum (though even there, Douglas's drunken driving looked even sillier than Cary Grant's in North By Northwest) and there're some nicely humorous bits throughout, but overall it doesn't really amount to terribly much.
