Beautiful scenery

I was hoping for a little more of the beautiful south Pacific scenery, but it was not to be. If only David Lean would have made this. But then it would have been three hours long.
The scenery of the striking Rosenda Monteros certainly didn't disappoint though. It's a shame she didn't make more films.
Was that Tarita (Marlon Brando's future wife) as one of the dancing girls?

Your point about Ms Monteros' scenery is well if belatedly taken. However I saw the film yesterday on DVD and was amazed to see that she appeared topless.

That is hardly sensational now but in 1962, when I saw the film in the West End, it was unheard of. The nude scene by the waterfall was included then but, as now, it was so distant as to be quite innocuous. However in 1962 in her scene on the beach with Joey (Gary Cockrell) she wore a simple and discreet bikini (see part 5/7 of the film on YouTube) whereas on the DVD she is topless apart from a garland which leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination.

Not that I'm complaining but I can only assume that two versions of that scene were made, one for the then less than permissive UK and US markets and another for countries which at the time were rather more broadminded. Does anyone have any information?

I'm quite keen to buy this film on DVD having just watched the youTube version of it and it turns out I'm a rather more broadminded fellow myself so which version of the DVD do I need to track down to view the film in order to continue to widen my horizons rather than be constricted by the less permissive UK/US markets? Do I need to purchase the french or german version of the DVD, do you know which one it is you watched with Ms Monteros' scenery intact? :D

reply

Sorry,DC, for the delay in replying but I haven't visited the site recently.

I'm afraid I can't help much. I live in the UK and bought the DVD last year from Choices UK, a company based in Guernsey (cost £10.99). Its cover is not particularly informative, giving the barest (no pun intended) details and no indication as to the international market at which it was aimed. You'd probably get the same version if you were to contact them. Good luck anyway!
