Was this originally written for Hudson/Day/Randall?

Whilst Cary Grant is very much his own man in this movie, Gig Young is clearly apeing Tony Randall in his mannerisms. (There's even a line in the movie about Grant vetoing Hudson as a potential suitor for Ms Day, an obvious nod to the earlier films.) David Hyde-Pierce's performance in Down With Love is an overt homage to Randall, but does anyone know how Young's was received when this movie was released? In many ways, it feels like it was originally written for the regular trio, and Young saw no other way to handle his part.

We may never know unless someone unearth's some filed away studio memos deep in the archive, but it would stand to reason that Day would have been coupled with her usual troupe of sex-comedy regulars.

Hudson was probably busy shooting something else.
