Cary was phoning it in.

He didn't act like his heart was in it. By this time, he'd been in movies for 30 years and it showed.

Wow. I wrote a long, well thought out and articulate response and *poof* it simply disappeared. UGH! I hate it when that happens. I don't think I can write it out fully like that again. Sometimes I hate Chrome.

Well, the gist was this: Cary Grant's part was supposed to be toned down. He was supposed to be easy going, casual and not rattled by many things. Remember that not every part he ever played was turned on like he was in Arsenic and Old Lace. Think of it more like he was in Notorious.

Sorry, my heart is just not in it to go into that full detail again. Suffice it to say that I disagree. I think he played the part as the part was meant to be played.

I use Edge and have no complaints. And what you said is quite sufficient. True, you could also say Cary was a talented actor and at the top of his game. He'd also matured, aged and mellowed and was behaving accordingly. He played a wealthy tycoon, but a very boring one. His character kept saying that he lived a stable, structured life, until Doris came along and upended it.

The one thing I didn't like was how she cynically used John Astin just to get a rise out of Carey.

Excellent point. Sadly, I think this was fairly common back in the day. The old rule of thumb was to make him chase you. I remember being raised that way but my generation (I'm a generation X) ignored those instructions. We ditched the head games.

I love your comment! Many thanks for your response!

Not to be contrary, but I'm afraid some things never change, and the behavior of some women is one of them. Some women I dated in high school and college, in the 70's and 80's and into the millenium were doing exactly the same thing.

Of course I'd be inclined to jump through a few hoops if the prize was Doris.
