WHY SOOO LOW??

I love this movie. I am a huge cary grant fan, probably seen atleast 20 of his films, and this is easily one of my favorites. Super funny, great dialogue. can't see at all why its a 6.5...if you haven't seen this movie, please do so, its very enjoyable

saw this movie today and i also wondered why the rating is so low for a good film like this

reply

It's a solid 8.5!!!

Why so low? Outdated perhaps. Doris Day as a wide-eyed 38 year-old virgin? The idea of a 38 year old woman behaving like a schoolgirl when aging Cary Grant flashes his baby-browns at her? Add to this the fact that the two leads have no chemistry. Grant seems in danger of nodding off in his scenes with Day. No fireworks there. Only thing going for this film is Day's light touch with comedy and the wardrobe by Norman Norell. The sexist attitudes also make it a bit of a bore for today's audience.

My goodness, I think Cary Grant could have made anyone behave like a schoolgirl with his baby-browns. I am a thirty-one year-old mother and I can't watch any Cary Grant movie without getting flushed and swooning at his gaze! That man was one of a kind.

Completely agree, Cary Grant would make any woman of any age get weak at the knees. This is not among his best movies, but it is entertaining and a bit of harmless fun.

Pray tell - how can a film be 'outdated?' Or a book? or?

My question does not relate to this film - just the comment.

I love this film. I love both Doris Day and Cary Grant. Audrey Meadows and Gig Young as well.

I don't think Doris is supposed to be playing a 38 year old woman here. I figure she's supposed to be in her mid/late twenties, and Cary mid 40's.

I don't really care actually because the movie is such fun and the performances are so good.

Plus the script is pretty weak. There are some truly great supporting actors giving the whole thing some pep, but the Rock Hudson scripts were much fuller overall. I do think, however, that the drunk-in-Bermuda scene is gut-busting funny. It make me laugh - hard - ever single time.

My favorite scenes are with John Astin! He had the best lines of them all.

"We're having haddock."

"Muscatel ... for my lady's pleasure" (gives me the creepy crawlies every time, lol)

"Hey, come back! I've already paid for the room!"

:)

Agreed! Those were the funniest bits.

"There are paper cups in the glove compartment."

I definitely think the movie deserves more than 6.5. I agree, it's not the best Grant or Day film but it is so well timed/performed and just generally entertaining. People may find it outdated but one has to think about the context of that era. Admittedly, Day looks a little too old to play the part but once you park that to one side, it's fine. The supporting cast were very good and I loved the very last scene with the baby and Roger! My favourite line was when they were reading out all the suitors Mr Shane had rejected and one of them was Rock Hudson.

I love both actors, especially Grant, and I loved this movie in my teens.

I recently watched it again (now in my early 40s) and while there were parts I enjoyed, I didn't really enjoy it as a whole.

I didn't feel any chemistry between the leads, except the shoulder-kissing scene (whew), and it wasn't as funny as I remembered.

Also, my practical sense ruined it for me as I spent the whole thing calling Doris all kinds of crazy for for just basically letting herself be picked up by a stranger. So dangerous on many levels.

I didn't mind that she was virgin as I know some women today who are still virgins at that age.

TTOM is enjoyable in it's own way, but it's also a really bad movie. It's extremely corny, including and especially the accompanying music. Everything is "telegraphed." We are told how to react by the music.
Grant is too uber-confident, Day is too giddily dumb-struck, it's a silly exercise without the craft or budget of something like My Fair Lady.
But yes, it is very enjoyable in a cheeky and silly way.
