At about 1:09 in the film, the Cossacks gather together for their battle with the Poles. With no computer generated enhancement, the ride to Dubno starts with Taras Bulba and his sons riding through a long valley. As they ride, troop after troop of Cossack cavalry join them from right and left, hundreds at a time, until at last thousands of horsemen are riding to war together to the thundering music of the fabulous Franz Waxman.
Watching it now and that is a scene you will never ever see again - now it would be a CGI effect. And then they meet another huge group of Calvary under Nicola.
shareYou can see a similar scene in The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King. Yes, of course it's CGI, but no less breathtaking. I'm sure they would have done the same in 1961 had they had the technology.
