The horse-gorge-jumping scene is embarrassingly funny. Two of jumps in particular, where the horses appear to be floating on thin air! Neigh-good!! :D

That's what they look like jumping at speed. Go to a steeplechase meet and stand as close as you can to one of the hurdles.
Yeah I've been to watch horse racing and seen them jump and they do just that 'jump' not float with motionless legs. I don't doubt that it was decent effects for the time though, just funny when you first see it.
