But I suppose she was 36 playing 40 or so, and Newman at 36 was playing five years younger, which seems plausible.

She was completely convincing in the part - she could certainly have passed for s fortysomething, and an actress, particularly one with such a major drink and drugs problem, could most definitely be seen as 'washed up' by that age.
Of the Page performances I have seen I think this is the best. She does have her usual theatrical mannerisms (she originated the role on stage along with several other members of the cast) but here they are used to mesmerising effect. A splendid performance.
