The 'procedure' - Spoiler Alert

Given the year the movie was made I was surprised at how subtly the abortion issue was handled. Other movies from the sixties seemed to delight in discussing sex and sex-related topics but not this one. Perhaps it's because it was still early in the sixties. I don't know.

I found it refreshing to see Chance's reaction when he learned his child had been aborted. He was disgusted, saddened, upset, and heart-broken. Today, people are so callous they don't give the loss of life a second thought.

Today the typical reaction would be like Boss Finley's. Instead of seeing the child as a blessing; a new addition to the family worthy of love and respect; he saw it as an obstacle to getting what he wanted. His only worry was how his daughter would be seen as impure but not for her sake, for his; how it would have a negative effect on his election.

The creep doctor who performed the abortion obviously had his motives as well. He would get to marry the girl whose child he had murdered. How sweet. Losing the child of the man she loved wasn't bad enough; she'd have to live with the daily reminder of what had been done to her and with the jerk who had done it.

It's no surprise that people like Boss Finley support abortion. He treated his children like extensions of himself; not individuals with their own lives to live. He used and abused them. It was about fulfilling his own needs. He gave no regard to what they wanted. He didn't want to make their lives happy; just his own. One has to have those attitudes towards their own offspring or they'd never be able to snuff the life out of them.

Boss Finley is also the kind of sleazy politician who claims to champion woman's rights but clearly, he had no respect or regard for women. He mistreated the ones in his own family and every other; including his mistress. This is the kind of person abortions rights people gladly support. To protect their 'right' to murder their unborn children they'll gladly put a corrupt and power-hungry liar in office; someone who will attempt to ruin people's lives all while claiming to be for them.

People who support abortion see it as their free-ticket to irresponsible behavior; it's sex without the consequence of pregnancy. To them having a child is worse than catching some nasty venereal disease. These people love making babies but not having them. They're twisted and sick.

I just hope someday we will, again, come to our senses as a society and realize we cannot kill off our young and pretend it's all okay. It is murder not just another 'procedure'.
