Never Released on Video or DVD

I liked this movie, first seeing it on T.V. as a young teenager and several times after.
Strong points: haunting music, scenes where they are clearing the village of rats, the isolated lives of these people in the remote, "colonial" East Indies.
The psychological aspects of the Rock Hudson character's breakdown are different that the book - which I read about 20 years earlier.
The book is somewhat hard to find. I found a used paperback.

The same director released another picture this same year, "To Kill A Mockingbird".

Why was this picture never released on video or DVD?

This movie is now available on the "Rock Hudson Collection," a collection of 5 of Hudson's lesser known films. The collection is available almost anywhere. Target, Wal-mart, Best Buy, etc. and it is pretty cheap, about $19.99. So hopefully you can find a copy.

It had a real sense of place, at a time when location shooting somewhere like Java was unusual. It's gritty, and Hudson gave one of his best performances. Burl Ives is excellent too, as is Gena Rowlands.
