Who loves this movie?.....

.....I Do! Yes it is historically inaccurate, badly acted at times, and punctuated with howler lines. But I really think it's a camp classic. I love that most of the women are sporting 60's hair and makeup. And that many of the men are wearing wannabe Steve Reeves goatees. The innuendo of homosexuality, incest and bestiality are hilarious. The Prince parades around in a micro-mini toga. The Queen seduces anyone that gets within 10 feet of her. Open some wine, prepare your own feast of snacks and invite some friends over to watch and laugh out loud.

I liked it a lot. This is more in tune with Italian peplum than a film like The Robe even though Aldrich directed. We had to watch it in two sittings since it's 2 hours 45 minutes. Stewart Granger and Stanley Baker were always excellent in whatever they did. The sets are tremendous, the girls are gorgeous.

Hysterical, this film was the source of many great moments when I was in college. We would gather in the TV room in the dorm, and hurl insults at the screen, and comment on how terrible Stewart Granger's acting was!

By a mile, my favorite film from either Stewart Granger or Robert Aldrich! It's a blast.

(4 years later, a much shorter, and more "authentic to the book" version appeared as a 10-minute sequence in the middle of the story of "Abraham" in the Dino DeLauentis-John Huston epic, "THE BIBLE: IN THE BEGINNING..." In that one, the city appeared to be destroyed in an atomic bomb blast!)
