Different ending?

I always remembered the ending to this movie differently. On the most recent version I've seen, the MST3K one, the soldier drives off with the girls and all are smiling. But the last time I was it was at least 30 years ago but I distinctly remember an officer showing up and ordering the soldier back to the base, which seemed like such an abrupt end to his part.
Different movie, same movie with different ending, or just my memory shot?
