Audie Murphy + Dan Duryea - What's Not To Like?

Hey folks,

This is just another simple western that has a good enough story, and it also has Murphy and Duryea. Not a bad way to spend an hour or so, and then when you throw in the great scenery around the St. George, Utah area, how can you go wrong? I have spent some time in that area, and I thought I recognized a couple of the red rock scenes. I guess it may not have been one of my most favorite westerns, but I do not remember seeing it in my youth, and watching it now was a nice interlude.

I agree. They are also wonderful together in RIDE CLEAR OF DIABLO. But the third person of interest is Burt Kennedy, the writer. He connects the film to the great Scott-Boetticher series. Two men, an obvious good guy and a charming scoundrel, are thrown together by circumstance and embark on a journey on which they have to be comrades. And there's a woman (dressed just like Karen Steele in RIDE LONESOME). SIX BLACK HORSES has the trade-the-woman-for-a-horse scene (cf. RIDE LONESOME) and the talk about loving a fallen woman (cf. COMANCHE STATION). He even lets Murphy repeat Scott's famous line from THE TALL T: "Some things a man just can't ride around." Shal we call this a derivative work? Still fun, though.

Hey Bear,

In the past two decades, I have been to Moab about a dozen times. From the time I first bought a Government Printing Office book on the geology of Arches National Park in the 1970s, I was captivated by its many beautiful pictures of Arches' fantastic sights. After finally going to Arches the first time, I figured I would visit Canyonlands National Park the next time I got back to Moab. Well, when I returned to Moab the next year, I thought I would just stop in Arches for an hour or so and then go on to Canyonlands.

I did not get to Canyonlands that visit, because I just could not leave Arches. I figured I would make it to Canyonlands the next time. Needless to say, I still have never been to Canyonlands. Everytime I get to Moab, I just am unable to stay away from all my old rock formation friends in Arches. I simply am unable to go there without making the hike up to Delicate Arch - and then there is Landscape Arch - and Skyline Arch of course - don't forget the balanced rock - and you can't pass up the Hoodoos - and...

I know Canyonlands is a most worthwhile place to visit and get lost in its beauty. I just have to make up my mind to get there one day without spending all my time in the Arches.

Best wishes,

Good Murphy Western with some fine Utah scenery. Audie gives his usual competent
performance but it's Duryea who steals it with his likeable rogue role. He is so good at playing those roles.O'Brien is attractive as the love interest and George Wallace is good as a slimy bounty hunter.Shame DD has to die but AM gets the girl and DD gets his six black horses.Sob.

Eddie (Western Nut) Audie Murphy fan.
