Lee's accent

Why does he sound like he's doing an American accent as Holmes? Were his lines dubbed?

reply

Yes. Lee's dialogue was looped by another actor. This was a not uncommon practice for a number of European movies that were produced in the '50s and '60's. Uncle was a Vampire (1959) is another example of Christopher Lee not providing his own voice, and I'm afraid there are several others.
