Sergeants 3 on TV or video

This is the only Rat Pack movie I've never seen on TV--either commercial or cable--or in video. Does anybody out there happen to know why it's never appeared on either?

reply

Trust me it has definately been on commercial TV. I grew up in frog town. We couldn't afford too many adventures to the theatre. It is one of my favorite movies. I would love to see it again too. For some reason the rat pack refussed to release it after a point

reply

Well if it's been on TV and you've seen it, I'll certainly take your word for it but I've still never seen it as such and I can't figure out why that's the only Rat Pack movie that you can't get on video or that hasn't been shown on TV, either commercial or cable, at least as of late!

reply

Great, I remember two reasons and I think Sinatra was the one I heard say this. The rat pack thought their acting was poor. They also stood besides Sammy Davis Jr. They felt his character should have had much higher rank in the movie.

reply

All that you say may very well be true but the fact is that "Sergeants 3" is my personal favorite of all the Rat Pack movies and I think it's a shame that you can't get it in video--at least not yet!

reply

i agree with nelson95, sergeants 3 is also one of my favorites, and i can't believe they won't put it on video, they need to take it out of the vault and let people see it again and buy it. if it came out on video i would be right there to purchase it. Again please release this

reply

“Sergeants 3” is my favorite “rat pack” film as well. I recall seeing it both in theaters and network TV during the mid 60s. I believe it is the only one of the “rat pack” films not available in any format because it so prominently features Peter Lawford. The vindictive Sinatra never forgave Lawford for being unable to deliver his brother-in-law, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, when Kennedy visited Hollywood.

reply

That's well and fine, but "Ocean's Eleven" also prominently features Peter Lawford as well, yet that one's available in video and is shown on TV all the time!

reply

Remember, this is essentially a remake of "Gunga Din." So Sammy Davis has the "servant" role (Gunga Din) done up as a black man, and the Thuggee villains of the original become American Indians, who are sometimes drunk, as I recall.

That's the way the movies were in 1962, but I suspect maybe that's why UA and Sinatra's estate have kept it out of circulation.

Too bad, overall its quite funny, and directed by Western specialist John Sturges ("The Magnificent Seven", "Gunfight at the OK Corral.")

reply

Perhaps you're right--Sinatra and company have managed to keep it out of circulation but, nevertheless, I did manage to find a copy in video through a private source!

I think the reason this is not out on DVD is because they did not secure the rights to the original Gunga Din screenplay nor give it credit for the story. I think there may have been a lawsuit involved. I may be wrong about this bit, but I think Peter Lawford brought Frank Sinatra the script and Frank later was mad about the copyeright hassle. How neither of these guys (nor John Sturges) recognized this as Gunga Din is pretty suspect. I also saw it at the theater as a kid (before I had ever seen Gunga Din and when I did "hey it's Sergeants Three!)I do know it was shown on TV many times in NYC on the Channel 7 Big Show 4:30 movie during the sixties. I recently saw the movie poster which I had forgotten about showing the Rat Pack stacked up in action poses which cracked me up back then. Brought back fond memories of being 11 again.

I saw this too when I was a kid. Found a copy on DVD at EBay. It was somebody's attempt to transfer a broadcast recording (COMMERCIAL FREE ANYWAY) from a DVR to fit a DVD 5 blank. Well, it cost me $7.00 plus shipping and the copy is really decent. It does show up on American Movie Classic's every now and then. Google AMC and write them some e-mail. Let'em know you'd like to see it. Search for the "Soldiers Three" on IMDb and you'll find and earlier version of Kipling's story.

I too, saw this on TV in the late 60s - early 70s. I have not seen it since. Since all of the principles in this film are long dead, I doubt that it would be held up by any personal animosity on the part of Sinatra or, his estate. The similarity to Gunga Din is unmistakable and since Gunga Din was such a popular film in its day, I doubt that there was any overlooking of copyright. Would Kiplings work still be under copyright protection that long after his death? I'm sure that there IS a legal aspect to the suppression but, what that may be, who can say? I have only vague recollections of this movie but, do recall that I liked it. It may see the light of day again, let's hope soon.

Your long wait is apartently over. For their 85th annaversary, Warner has announced that they will be re-releasing the Rat Pack collection and will now include Sergeants 3. We should see this in the late spring early summer months. Warner will release 10 or so other previously unavailable films throughout the year, but were hush about any specific titles. Still, good news for the classics.

reply

I just read the schedule for Turner Classics. It will be shown on May 21. Get your vcr or DVR
warmed up. Our long wait is over.

reply
