the end is confusing

Why do they pretend to tear up Lawford's re-enlistments papers, let him drive off and then say arrest that man he is a deserter?

don't get it.

It was just the usual back & forth between them. Since Lawford's character feigned being hurt to pick Sinatra's vest pocket for the paper, he had to get him back.

If we all liked the same movie, there'd only be one movie!

If you are interested in movie history, this ending derives from Gunga Din, which is actually a disguised reworking of The Front Page, according to co-author Ben Hecht. Hecht used to claim he always reworked the plot of the newspaper comedy Front Page, and resold it to the studio heads in various milieus. Anyway, if you look at the original Front Page, Hildy Johnson is leaving the newspaper business to get married. Walter Burns, the editor, gives Hildy his inscribed gold watch at the end, sends him off and then calls the cops to arrest him, using his curtain line: "The son-of-a bitch stole my watch!"
