The songs are just PERFECT

Love this film. I've recently rewatched this after about 20 years and the songs are still just as perfect as ever.

1) "Saakhiya Aaj Mujhe Neend Nahin Aayegi" sung by Asha Bhosle (showing Minoo Mumtaz, the elder borther's in-house courtesan)
Even though the lyrics are laughably thinly veiled (very roughly translated as Tonight I wont be able to sleep) its still a good song.

2) "Meri Jaan O Meri Jaan" sung by Asha Bhosle (showing the second courtesan the younger brother visited)
This is just ok. Acts as a contrast for the wife's attempt at a flirty song later on.

3) "Piya Aiso Jiya Mein Samaaye Gayo Re" sung by Geeta Dutt (showing Meena Kumari; Choti Bahu's getting dolled up for her husband)
I think I might do a separate post just to talk about this song.

4) "Na Jao Saiyan Chhudaake Baiyan" sung by Geeta Dutt (showing Meena Kumari, Rehman)
The seduction song that doesnt work. However the thing I love about it is that it is perfect for the situation. It is sung by the drunk Choti Bahu and it seems that this was taken into account by the composer. Look at the chorus line (or whatever the final line of each stanza is called) - each contains a repetition as well as a pause that sort of acts as a silent placeholder for hiccups. I've always sort of heard those, even though they are silent.

5) "Koi Door Se Aawaaz De Chale Aao" sung by Geeta Dutt (showing Meena Kumari)
The brilliant, haunting melody that pours her loneliness into one tune.

6) "Bhanwara Bada Naadaan" sung by Asha Bhosle (showing Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rehman)
Waheeda/Jabba WRITING her own poetry (love song) just to show how independent she is.

7) "Meri Baat Rahi Mere Man Mein" (showing Waheeda Rehman)
Jabba's song about undecalred love; is it me or did she look more beautiful when she was sad? This is sung pretty much in the shadows, in keeping with the mood of the song.
