What a Fantasy! All alone in Italy!

All those gorgeous locations, all that beautiful scenery. And there are the two photogenic stars wandering, lonely as two little ants, the whole of Italy at hand. I'll bet today you couldn't even SEE the scenery because of all the tourists.

That's what i was thinking -- where are all the people??

I forgot to say, I think that time period was before the days of cheap air fares when anyone and his brother could go visit Rome, It'ly. Travel was more elite, more expensive then. The days when people dressed up all the time - did you notice Troy Donahue's jacket and tie as they buzzed around on his motorcycle?

Clearly this was a decision of the director. Most exteriors lacking other people are during "the magic hours" (near sunrise and sunset) for the fantastic lighting. You'll notice the extremely long shadows. Obviously, Romans would have been out and about during these times of the day, so the director must have arranged to clear the streets for his own effect. Roman Holiday was made almost a decade before and by contrast is LOADED with locals. My in-laws visited Rome in 1964 (just 2 yrs after this film) and noted Rome was PACKED with people. The entire city... all day and night. I can only assume Daves wanted to focus on their romanace, as if nothing else existed. Personally, I think the hustle and bustle of Rome **added** to the romance in Roman Holiday.

Depending on the time you are there, of course. I've been only once, and would love to go again, so much to see. I can watch this movie over and over. They sure don't make movies like this anymore, so romantic!
