Who was that idiot?

A reviewer on this movie's main IMDB page states:

~~It is pathetic to watch two 60+ adults behaving as if they were still in their 30's~~

Neither Bob nor Bing was even sixty, yet! They were both born in May of 1903, and therefore could not have been any older than 59 when this movie was released. Therefore, they had to only have been 58 when filming.

Someone beat that moron for her inaccuracy.

Eh, I wouldn't be to harsh on that part of the critique considering the ages weren't too far off. And this is certainly the lesser of their seven "Road To" flicks (although the 'Sip a Little Oolong Tea (?)' song is probably my favorite of theirs ever), it's difficult to fault someone for not liking the movie. I actually enjoy it personally overall more than "Singapore" and "Zanzibar", but its weaknesses are glaring.

It's really odd how this movie is always relegated to the back of the line when it comes to rating the 'road' movies... This is by far my favorite of the ones I've seen. I'll admit that having this one of VHS since I was a kid and only having seen 4 of the others lately colors my judgement, but seriously - neither Bob nor Bing EVER looked 'young and strapping' so age is really no problem. The jokes are a bit more tongue in cheek than in the earlier movies, something that fits the slapstick humor fine. Although completely ludicrous, the story seems slightly more 'realistic' than, say, starting out on a raft in the middle of the atlantic...! Plus Peter Sellers is hilarious as the Indian Doctor!!! :)

I think I'll have to sit through a few viewings of the older ones to see if it'll shift my perspective...

I agree, I would hope that when I'm at that age in life I'm still capable of half what Bing and Bob were able to do. Taken for what it is, a comedy, and add Bing & Bob, even at 59, and you've still got one fine movie.

Think of it this way--two old steeped-in-vaudeville performers get a chance to make another fun movie for their fans. It's obvious Hope and Crosby were having fun making it, so even though times and tastes had changed, I'm sure there were enough oldsters still around to make this less-than-average road picture worth the effort. Besides, Joan Collins in 1962--zowie!

Their age is irrelevant - the Hope/Crosby movies are timeless. However, by modern standards, this looks horribly dated and almost racist. "Mr Ahso", the plinky-plonky music, lightshade hats and, once again, Western actors playing Asian roles, look glaring to modern eyes. It's possible to forgive all this as a product of its times and enjoy it as simple fun all the same.

I think a beating is a little strong. How about a stern brow beating?

They shouldn't have been competing each other to see who romanced Joan Collins, they should have been competing each other to see who adopted her as a daughter.

The Hollywood double standard of the day. Dorothy Lamour was considered too old to be a romantic interest, but not Hope and Crosby. They may have had young mistresses in their private lives, but the characters they played were not rich and powerful movie stars. Money makes most men attractive to some women no matter how old they get.

reply

Big deal. They were still way too old for Joan Collins, who could have been their daughter. Their characters were not rich, powerful men like they were in real life. Ordinary jerks pushing 60 usually can't get young and beautiful women like Collins was then. How ironic that when she was Alexis on "Dynasty" she complained she didn't want her character to have an affair with a man 6 years younger than her. She thought he was too old for Alexis, who was a grandmother.

The movie is a comedy. Need I explain what "comedy" is? This movie is not billed as a romantic movie. If you want to go there, as a woman, I can say that under her situation, being told to get the information from Hope, then growing to like them, then being told they will die, running for their lives together, etc., feelings could most definitely develop.

Was Rhett too old for Scarlett because Gable does look older than Leigh. There were differing opinions on the Hepburn and Cooper movie, but it is still popular to this day. It always amazes me how people become so critical. For those who love Hope, Crosby and Lamoyd, this is fun. If you don't like the movie, why even be in this message board?

The Civil War was a different era and cannot be compared to modern times. Gable was older than Leigh, but not ridiculously so. Yes, the Hope-Crosby movie was a comedy - a very bad one. Sure feelings could develop under those circumstances, but not necessarily romantic ones. The fact is they wanted a young hottie because that's the way the system worked in 1962. Due to the double standard, Lamour was considered too old to be a romantic interest back then. Ironically, when she was doing Dynasty many years later, Collins, then playing the ultimate cougar, Alexis, told the producers to get rid of actor John Cypher, who was only 6 years her junior, as her romantic interest. She thought he was too old for her character and wanted a younger man. Things had changed over 20 years.
