Sir Stanley Baker HGV driver

Very few actors are effective truck drivers and use stunt doubles to handle tasks of this type. Stanley Baker is the exception to this rule and can be seen driving the large Austin truck of WW2 vintage on several occasions. Remember that old trucks of this type are not equiped with synchro-mesh gearboxes or power assisted steering. A previous film that he appeared in, Hell Drivers (1957), also shows him using this driving skill to great effect.

Altogether a great action film with a complex and ingenious plot that holds one's attention at all times. Contains a small cameo role by future 'Likely Lads' star Rodney Bewes.

I only discovered this by accident a few weeks ago but if you`re looking for a taut heist thriller with a gritty edge then it`s now available officially on uk r2 dvd.

Maybe younger viewers will find it "a bit slow" or lacking in action but the heist is planned with meticulous care and details are only revealed sparingly so you`re never completely sure of how they`re going to do it until the end.The film grips and grips and only lets you go after an unexpected but ultimately more satisfying ending. It`s been compared to "League Of Gentlemen"(1960)but this is a much "harder" film with very little humour-what did you expect from the incomparable and now sadly forgotten Sir Stanley Baker.
