Several sources say this film is set in 1956 during the Suez crisis.but I don't recall getting this impression from watching the film.
Certainly the film is set during the preparations for an overseas deployment,but these were not unusual in the period,if there are hints it is set during Suez I missed them.
A belated reply, but it could just as easily be predicting the emergency in Aden (1963-7) since tensions had been simmering in Yemen for some time before that and the expectation that it would escalate certainly would have been given a lot of press coverage in 1961-2.

I never felt it was set in 1956 but someone somewhere suggested it was.
It is a good film however.
Can't be set in 1956 as Turpin and Swavek talk about their time in Hamburg as being 15 or 16 years ago. They would only have been stationed there after the war so the film must be set around 1961/62.
