Herbert Rules!!!

I think Herbert lom is one of the greatest phantom of all time, he Lon and Claude is best!

He is so kind and you really feel sorry for him, and thats the wat the phantom should be...anyone agree?

reply

YES!!!!!!

Hi, Anton!

Nevermore!

reply

The character of The Phantom has varied from film to film and actor to actor, but Lon Chaney came closest in manner and appearance to the character in Gaston Leroux's original novel - Erik was not a nice guy!

Those of you who think you know everything should politely defer to those of us who actually do!

reply

True, but ya gotta admit, both Lon and Herbert's interpretations of the Phantom tug at the heart strings one way or another. Both were excellent, but Chaney's is Erik, I think. Though I love the Andrew Lloyd Webber version--one name: Michael Crawford--Lon is Erik as Leroux intended him and as the real Erik most likely was. And yes, I believe Erik really lived.

Nevermore!

I concur. Herbert Lom was terrific as the Phantom. He brought a winning blend of touching pathos and tremendous dignity to the part.

Nobody does W.C. Fields singing "Mama Told Me Not to Come" better than Paul Frees.

reply

Just having Lom and Gough together in the same film makes it a classic - in my opinion...

reply

He was good, and I've got nothing against him...

But it's all kinds of a shame that Christopher Lee didn't get the role. I understand they were considering him (and with him as part of the Hammer stable, wouldn't it be great if he'd gotten to play THREE movie monsters), but somehow he didn't end up with the role.

Especially when you consider he's a classically trained singer!

reply

Lee should have had a chance to star in his own version, but I'm glad it wasn't this one - Lom was nothing short of great.

And Lee did indeed play "three" movie monsters: Dracula of course, the Frankenstein monster, and the Mummy.

reply

He indeed made for a fine and dignified Phantom.

What do you think this is, a signature? It's a way of life!

reply

I love love love the scenes of him in the movie prior to the fire accident - SO handsome yet had that special love for Christine and in the finale sacrificed his life for her.
