I remember I saw this in my junior English class. I loved it. We, also, had to read the story and summarize it. I got a really good grade on it. Anways, this movie was really good. But, still not as good as the story(of course). I recommend this movie and story to everyone.

This film was a Twilight Zone episode??? When I saw it, i didn't see Rod Serling narrating.

Can someone confirm to me this was a TZ episode?

the horror...the horror...

reply

It won an emmy as a Twilight Zone episode. It also won an oscar for best short film, making it the only film to ever win both an emmy and an oscar.

reply

Serling bought the rights to the film after it was created, thus the absence of his ubiquitous Twilight Zone narrarations. It was then aired as an official episode of The Twilight Zone, for which it won its Emmy & Oscar.

reply

It is avail. on Treasures of the Twilight Zone, along with a never before seen episode called "The Encounter" with George Takei

that episode was a trip, too!

reply

It's also available on Netflix.

Oeuf, the netbroadcaster.com video's quality is terrible. Though it is illuminating to see the original French credits.

Check Youtube instead, they have the Twilight Zone ep up'd.

In Canada Movieola the short movie channel is running it. I watched it last night for the first time in about 25 years and it is still incredible. It is amazing how many films have stolen the premise and placed their own spin on it.

Could you name a couple?

I don't mean to sound accusing, I'm just curious. I've never noticed that.

That's okay, you just asked a question. I will give you a few off the top of my head.

************************SPOILERS FOR SEVERAL FILMS***************************

The two that immediately spring to mind are Carnival of Souls (Woman is in car crash, imagines life if she had gotten away only to return to the car as it is pulled from the water) and Jacob's Ladder (Man gets wounded during army training, imagines returning home only to see his worst nightmares until he stops fearing death and accepts it and immediatly dies on the operating table).

This is a classic story, people when faced with death imagine the life they could have had only to be drawn at the moment of their passing. Another one that played with the theme was Brazil, with the hero making a great escape in which he is reunited with his dream girl and flees the city for his ideal life only to have the audience realize that he is still being tortured and this was all in his mind.

Once you become familiar with this story you begin to see just how influential it really is.

The final episode of Season 4 of Boardwalk Empire also uses the premise of this story / film, in showing Richard Harrow having the life he wanted, only to then see him dead . . .

didn't see it mentioned but you can find this on dvd on a copy of rod serling's "patterns" which is a very good short movie at about 83 minutes. not the greatest quality but i doubt it'll cost alot.

reply

I found it on DVD at my city library.

I got a copy of this as a bonus on the Critic's Choice DVD of "Patterns."
Patterns is a superb film from 1956, and it truly deserves a fully remastered and restored edition. This edition released by Critic's Choice happens to be the best copy I have seen so far, and it's usually very cheap to buy. (under $10.00 )

When I saw the "bonus" being offered, a 28 minute short with the English title of "An Occurrence at Owl Creek", I thought it was going to be nothing more than filler. Imagine my surprise when I discovered one of the best shorts I've ever seen. This short may actually be better than the feature film....and that's saying quite a lot. The quality is actually good for "Owl Creek," although I'm certain that the newer solo release is better, and it's also a LOT more expensive.

It's also available on the DVD: Johnny Legend Presents Golden Age Ghost Tales. You can get in on Amazon or from his company Raunchy Tonk.
