in the plot outlines the main character is refered once as "an innocent man" and once as "a civil war soldier" he is niether, he is a plantation owner who attempted to sabatoge the bridge.

wasnt sure myself until I read the Bierce's short story. The Irony of being hung off the bridge he meant to destroy is rich.....
