What a boring movie!!

I looked forever for this movie cause I heard it was good and I also liked Repulsion and when I finally watched it, man what a bore!!!
Three people on a boat the whole time and the kid and older man trying to up one another the whole time and that's it.

This movie just sucks. Repulsion 8.5/10
Knife 2/10
Top 3 most disappointing movies I've watched lately:

1. Blue Velvet
2. Knife In The Water
3. Through A Glass Darkly

I enjoyed both Knife in the Water and Blue Velvet tremendously. Then again, I hadnt seen a good movie in quite a while so maybe they seemed a lot better than they really were.

reply

No, both are quite good, the other guy (girl?) just has different tastes in movies... no big deal.

reply

I think I actually have a good taste in movies but these ones just didn't do anything for me.

Repulsion > Knife
Mulholland Dr. > Blue Velvet

reply

Give Knife a second try, It's an excellent movie and if you are a Polanski fan i'm suprised you didn't like it. Anyway look a little harder if yer willing to give it another go around, I think you might see more than meets the eye!

reply

I think I'll try to find The Tenant and watch that instead.
Sisters was okay but I don't think I could watch KITW again.

reply

Silly..! Sisters is a Brian De Palma film..

reply

Did you just say mulholland drive is better than blue velvet? wow! bad call.

reply

I agree for 90 minutes the film dragged on, I rented it from Netflix and had to return it due to sheer boredom, I love Chinatown, Repulsion, Tenant, Pianist, Rosemary you name it, but this is Polanski before he hit that level of quality.

It was very slow, non suspenseful, lacked humor relief, or emotion. I don't understand what made it so good unless it was the ending. I turned it off after an hour, I just didn't see the point.

reply

through a glass darkly is disappointing???
news to me...

reply

All three are on my top ten.

I just found that funny.

I want to see how you would like Eraserhead. And I'm not trying to be mean in any way.

reply

Ay ay aaay! I agree with you saint. This movie seemed to go on forever and you wonder why if the men had such disdain for each other why they would ever embark on this journey anyway. It just seemed like an unlikely situation. I liked the minimalism of the movie, but wasn't impressed.

"Stop kissing everyone's *** or you'll be known as an ***kisser!"

mptnla, it's not really that far-fetched. Andrjez saw an opportunity to exert his dominance over the Hiker, so he invited him on the boat simply to patronise him and subdue his cocky arrogance. Because the Hiker is so cocky and arrogant, he allows himself to be brought along so he can be as dour and sarcastic as possible. Both of them get more than they bargained for.

As for the ending...

(SPOILER FOLLOWS)

It's brilliant. Andrzej has to either concede that he murdered the Hiker, or concede that he did not kill him, but his wife was unfaithful to him with the Hiker (which is what happened). For a normal person, the second option is clearly more palatable, but Andrzej has taken pride in flaunting his younger, attractive wife for the entire film, and it's not such an easy decision for him. We don't see what decision he makes, which strengthens the ending, in my opinion. What a tangled web Polanski weaved.

i think you have a bad movie critique......blue velvet? knife in the water?

c'mon is not that boring! surely is slow and sometimes seems than nothing happens but the story is interesting enough to catch your attention.

7/10

reply

Good for you. At least you have a rather "individual" sense of taste, if that's a good thing?

"This movie just sucks."

Are you kidding? This film is a cinematic powerhouse, easily one of Polanski's best.

Last film watched:
Knife in the Water by Roman Polanski - 9/10

reply

I think I have a pretty good taste in movies but I still don't see why people like this movie.
Still think Repulsion is better.

reply

I guess it depends on your taste in film. I think Repulsion is a good film, but this one is better. It's a perfect mix between Alfred Hitchcock and Ingmar Bergman.

Last film watched:
Nostalghia by Andrei Tarkovsky - 9/10

reply

I enjoyed the movie but felt the climax to which the whole film was building up was not exactly satisfying.

But on the other hand, what was I expecting, really? It was pure realism, and anything more would have just been a way to satisfy audience expectations, rather than stay true to the form of the film. And fishstix03, I like your observation: it adds a lot to the drama of the movie.

reply

I felt that too when I first watched this film. On a second watch, I felt the climax was perfect, as well as the ending. This film is great writing.

Last film watched:
The Trial by Orson Welles - 10/10

It doesn't matter if you have good taste in movies and it doesn't matter whether you see why people like this movie. My 12 year old niece thinks The Beatles suck and doesn't see what people like about them either. An imbecile would definitely find this movie boring, not suggesting you are in that camp, I'll just leave that thought with you.

It was alright.. although nothing really happens between 00.15-01.15.. This movie could easily have been 30 minutes long, if they'd just cut out the middle part where they were on a common boating-trip.. it was like watching the Pam & Tommy-tape again, but without the sex-part..

reply

Nope. All the little details and pieces of dialogue are meaningful.

reply

Sure, it helps create some tension between the characters, and gives us a little more insight to their personalities, but I felt it kept dragging on and on, even though the movie was only 90 minutes long..

But anyway, it's all a question of taste.. I'm sure many people like the idea of watching people play Mikado for hours, but I thought it was quite dull and couldn't wait for the movie to end.

reply

Nah, I'm just messing with you, but I don't really find Knife in the Water boring at all. You should check out some Antonioni or Tarr if you want to find some films where nothing happens. Not that those directors are bad, but their films are much slower paced than this one.

I don't like Blue Velvet either; I liked TAGD even more than Knife though.

Agreed on Antonioni/Tarr...compared to Blow-Up or Werckmeister or Zabriskie Point, this film is DIrty Harry. I first saw Knife as an 18 year old and again 25 years later and was totally engrossed both times. It is magnificent.

You nailed it with the last sentence- exactly what I was thinking in the back of my mind! Not that I'm on here just trying to be a jerk - I'm just genuinely baffled, since there are many formal similarities between Knife in the Water and Repulsion, and both are distinctly Polanski.
