Years ago I saw another movie about a couple that befriend a young man. It was also foreign, and from the same era. I'm pretty sure it had the word "knife" in the title. I remember a picnic near a lake and it ending violently.

Kaaterskill Falls is a remake of this movie. i haven`t seen it.
Deathtrap is a twist of the same story and Dark Harbor is a remake of Deathtrap.
I have only seen Dark Harbor. no picnic, but a mushroom and a lake. harshly any violence.
"Limite" is a brazilian movie from 1931. It has a lot of influence of the vanguard period of that time, beautiful photography and the same premise: three people on a boat.

"The Edge" starring Alec Baldwin is another claustrophobic, love triangle face-off that may somewhat resemble this story. I know it´s not the one you´re looking for.
