carly?

Why is her name listed at "carlyle hardwicke"? While watching the movie, I heard "Carly" and I know that there are different ways to spell it, but it just seems weird. Also, the TCM website spells it "carlye" which seems more reasonable. I know it's not important, but just wondering if anyone knew.

Carly is the nickname for Carlyle, just like Bill is a nickname for William or Bob is a nickname for Robert.

I seen this film again recently and decided to put the subtitles on incase I have missed anything (over the dozens of times I've watched it!) because sometimes, there are a few things that I still don't quite understand surrounding elements of the plot. And anyway, I was just going to say, on the subtitles, whenever they say Carly's name (it's normally Bill, isn't it), it is spelt 'Carlyle'. Which is not how you pronounce it. Strange...

Still love this film though.

Marilyn Monroe: I don't want to be rich. I just want to be wonderful.

The subtitles on the dvd I rented spelled it "Carlye."

If you google Carlye, it comes up as a girl's (woman's) name on several websites.

Just because a name CAN be short for something, it doesn't mean it is. People submitting to imdb are dropping the ball here. I just watched it and don't remember anywhere in the film where it is mentioned that her name is Carlyle and his is William. I only heard Carly and Bill. Therefore, with no credit listing character names in the film, that is how they should be listed on imdb. Were the names Carlyle or William mentioned in the film anywhere? If not, there is no reason they should be assumed.

"William" was mentioned at least twice - once by the bobby who asks for Bill's identification after the barbecue fire and reads "William" from his proffered passport.

The second time is not long after that in the scene where Astaire threatens Lemmon with banishment to a remote posting due to his unwanted publicity in all the morning papers due to the barbecue fire.

You're welcome. ;->
