Major Spoiler on the main page

I mean, It says right under Peter Cushing's credit that he played Clegg. I mean I guessed it partway theough the movie, but I'm glad I didn't come to this page before viewing it.

I agree Master. It gives it away. I saw this on the big screen when it first came out and it is true that part of the mystery is that Peter Cushing who plays a reverend is indeed the captain. It doesn't take the viewers long to figure out he is the captain but why ruin it in the credits. The movie had horror moments but I thought it was more of a cat and mouse mystery between Cushing and Capt. Collier that made it interesting.

This film is, after all, over 45 years old. So I think it's fairly safe to assume that most people will know that already.

reply

That is true but we must remember that there is always a new generation of fans that may not have seen it so why risk ruining part of their enjoyment.

Slightly off topic but in the same vein....the local DVD issue of the 1969 Planet Of The Apes <<<<<< SPOILER COMING : READ NO FURTHER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT >>>> .... has, on the front cover of the DVD package, Charlton Heston looking up the statue of liberty half submerged in the sand. So the distributors are assuming that everyone in the world knows this major plot twist when they rent the DVD. All they're really doing is taking pleasure away from people who don't know the climax.

As for Captain Clegg, I agree that this is a bit annoying but at least in this case, even if you haven't seen the film, it becomes pretty obvious before too long that Cushing is Clegg.

Since the Charlton Heston version of "Planet of the Apes" begins with him and the other astronauts travelling back to Earth centuries in the future, due to time dilation (Heston says so in the voiceover), it can't be a huge shock that their destination turns out to be... Earth, centuries in the future .

We see Cushing as Clegg in the pre-credits sequence. I don't think it was meant to be a rug-pull for the audience when the excise men find out his true identity.

reply

Cushing is not seen as Clegg in the opening. We only see Clegg's hand, and he doesn't speak, so there's no hint at that time that he's Cushing
