The movie plays more like a tragedy; oh look at these poor souls and all they must endure... A person's poor upbringing, lack of education, and sad existence does not give them a pass for bad behavior.

agreed. I felt the same way while watching Rocco and his brothers. Rocco is probably the dumbest character ever depicted in cinema.
