Number of reasons:

-the grand Rathbone

-Winwood almost steals the film !

-Helm is gorgeous

-music is pretty good & above average

-visuals are fun

It is not as bad as some make it out to be. It deserves a 6 or 6.5; its rating here is way too low. The dragon cannot compare to Ray Harryhausen's creatures, but Bert I. Gordon never had big budgets; so, when that is considered, he did well with what little money that he had. And, although not as good as "Jack the Giant Killer" (released the same year), who can resist watching Basil Rathbone and Estelle Winwood, who, I agree, pretty well steals the film. I am 44, and first saw it at 5, and the attack on the knight by the hag (pretty hideous makeup!) always stuck with me. I have the official MGM/UA release on DVD. The print is excellent.

Helm is awesome! Basil Rathbone is always outstanding! Gary Lockwood did a good job. Estelle Winwood is a golden example of Hollywood's Golden Age. This is a good movie in spite of the Bert I. Gordon. Unusual for that to be the case.

This is yet another movie I like that history has treated unkindly.

Gordon was lucky to get greats like Basil Rathbone and Estelle Winwood-they really steal the film. And, yes, Helm is gorgeous-but then, she always was.
