Loud Background Music

As with most movies made in the 50's and 60's, the background music in this movie is BLARING so loud and "dramatic" that it overwhelms the movie. That type of dramatic music wasn't appropriate for every single scene. It's a shame that while they spent money to restore the movie in a digital format for the DVD, that they didn't tone down that annoying music, which at times was louder that the dialog! Thank goodness for subtitles! That being said, this movie was great, and Alberto Sordi was simply perfect in the role Antonio Badalamenti.

I would *never* expect a DVD producer to do what you're suggesting. DVD producers will almost always go with "the intent of the film maker" (as far as that is possible, anyway). When they don't is when they get universally (or, nearly so) hammered.

They're not going to completely remix the sound to change all of the basics of the sound balance between the elements any more than they would re-edit the film. (Besides which: How do you know that the individual sound elements even still exist?)
