I can't help but chuckle when I stop to consider how the three male characters of the Tyrone family (father and two sons) seem to go into near horrified disgust when considering the drug addiction of the mother. Yet all three of them seem to have no problem with their own destructive drinking habits.

At the time, yeah, drinking was more respectable than any drug abuse. Things have changed now that pot especially seems to be more acceptable than alcohol.
