Serious moral question about the bar fight

Hey gang, I have a dead-serious moral question about the bar fight. Let me preface by saying I usually consider myself a liberal, live-and-let live, peaceful guy. (E.g., oppose the death penalty because I fear executing the wrong guy, not cause I think people are inherently "good.") Reasonable athlete, not a tough guy. Has anyone here ever been in a similar situation? I really believe it that happened to me, and I ever had the chance to run into this clown again, what I would do would make Tarantino cringe. I mean, real Joe Don Baker in Charley Varrick stuff, the ol' pair of pliers and a blowtorch. Think about it: there is no way I am beating this mutilated prick in a so-called "fair" fight; he is too used to his condition. But, if I can get the drop on him, all bets are off. Seriously, am I being too harsh? Should I feel more compassion? ("Hey, yeah he's *beep* up, but look what happened to him...") This question is not a put-on, I'm not a kid, never been arrested, etc. Maybe I shouldn't write this in public, but I understand the one-armed actor--and war hero--Bill Raisch died of emphysema; let me just say that this one scene bothers me so much, that I will stop right here and not share my private feelings... I am prepared for any polite disagreement. But if you want to dis me, just ask yourself how you would feel if you were in Jack Burns' shoes...

It was not a fair fight for Jack Burns, since Burns was not used to fighting one armed.

I can't understand why the other patrons in the bar sided 100% with the one armed guy. It couldn't have been because he was a nice, popular guy. The guy at the police station even told Burns he shouldn't have tangled with him because he was a mean one. So the one armed guy had a reputation.

If I'd been in Burns spot I'd have been tempted to use both arms and a pool cue as well, or anything else that was handy. That one armed guy was scary.

On the other hand, Burns went into the bar specifically to get into a fight and get thrown in jail. I think we was a bit surprised at how quickly it happened.

Absurdity: A Statement or belief inconsistent with my opinion.

I think it was just plain old small town zenophobia. The one-armed man was a local and Burns wasn't. The other patrons seemed to be Hispanic and although LoPatin isn't a Hispanic name, he could have had a Hispanic mother...
