Did Anyone Notice The Rifle Bixby Had In The Chopper?

Hey folks,

This isn't exactly the most enlightening thing about the film, but I just wanted to point out that Bill Bixby had an M1 Garand with him in the helicopter. He apparently had intended to take it with him when he planned on climbing down the ladder from the chopper to the ground and then going after Kirk Douglas. This film was made in 1962, and the M14 had replaced the M1 about 1957 as the standard military rifle. The M1 would not have been out of place, however, since some military units would still have the M1s on hand. Also, within a few more years, the M16 would replace the short lived M14.

In any case, it was nice to see the M1 even if it was only seen for about ten seconds. The M1 was the main battle rifle of the GIs in WWII as well as the Korean War.

Best wishes,

It's possible that the helicopter and pilots were attached to a National Guard or Reserve component, either of whom would still be using Garands in the early '60's

I believe that until they were issued the AR-15/M-16 (and they were the first military unit to use it) the Air Police used the M-2 carbine...I didn't know about any Garands in the Air Force
