Regarding Walter Matthau's deputy Harry.

It was played by William Schallert who did a great job in it. He had a great career as a character actor but it is strange that this great role didn't help him become an even bigger star.
It certainly helped in developing some stars such as the truck driver (Carroll O' Connor), the cruel deputy (George Kennedy), and of course Walter Matthauu the sherriff). Matthau and Kennedy were later to win oscars and O'Connor was to be great as Archie Bunker and in In the Heat of the Night tv series. Also Bill Bixby who was an uncredited helicopter airman who became famous as the father in The Courthship of Eddie's Father in the tv series.

Of course us old folk remember William Schallert as Patty Duke's father!

And of course ... Nils Baris on Space Station K-7.

And as I recall, he had a great turn as the embarassing spouse of a promising politician in a Lou Grant episode.

And I just checked his IMDb listing. He has 327 credits.

327!

I doubt there are many actors who have more.

Windmills do not work that way!

327 credits? right!

<cut to Walter Matthau rolling his eyes>

Possibly the funniest thing I've read on IMDB!

Actually, Bill Bixby rose to fame as Tim O'Hara (his first notable TV role) on the TV series My Favorite Martian which debuted in September of '63. William Schallert is best remembered as the father on the Patty Duke Show which debuted in the same year.

Schallert also teamed with Walter Matthau in in another of my favorite movies, "The Incident" and both were terrific in it.

In between, in 1973, Schallert played a New Mexico sheriff opposite Walter Matthau(now a star, and playing a sympathetic bank robber!) in the crime thriller "Charley Varrick."

I've always figured this as a "echo remake" of Lonely are the Brave, as if Schallert's deputy got promoted to Sheriff and Matthau's sheriff inexplicably changed his name and went to the wrong side of the law(as a bank robber.) Perhaps Matthau's sheriff had been so disgusted by what happened to Kirk Douglas, not to mention the nincompoops(Schallert) and sadists(George Kennedy) on his team that a life of crime struck him as a better deal.

I am fantasizing here. The main thing is: Matthau, Schallert, New Mexico.
