The finest film score ever composed

No score tops this for sheer sweep and magnificence, as well as sense of place.

#2 - Chinatown. Does any score convey mood better or more economically?

Great score, but others are equally sweeping and magnificent -

The Magificent 7 Elmer Bernstein

The Ten Commandments Elmer Bernstein

How the West was Won Alfred Newman

Spartacus Alex North

Ben-Hur Miklos Rosza

...and many more.

Blade Runner
Lawrence of Arabia
Empire Strikes Back
My personal favorites

Maurice Jarre is a well known composer of movie scores. This movie and Doctor Zhivago are tops.

Good choices. I would add:

Braveheart
Vertigo
Doctor Zhivago
Once Upon a time in America
Goldfinger & On her majesty's secret service
Superman

And easily 10 more.

It sounded to me like he ripped off John Williams' score to Star Wars

reply

You do know Lawrence of Arabia came out long before Star Wars.

reply

Not really, the "famous" theme is good, the rest is boring. One of the most dullest movies ever actually.

reply

One of the best, but not nearly as good as "The Big Country" by Jerome Moross.
