A decent man?

Contrary to what has been written on imdb, I didn't get the impression that Vic was a particularly nice guy. Perhaps deep down he meant well but his actions toward Ingrid were pretty low in parts - violent temper, dishonesty, alcoholic rages, rudeness etc. etc. Interested to hear how his behaviour can be justified/ explained.

You come into this house drunk, filthy drunk! You're filthy! You talk filth, you ARE filth!

Read the book - the film doesn't give justice to Vic. He is a decent guy - just young and growing up.

I think his behavior can be justified simply by the fact that he's human. I think that split of his feelings towards Ingrid -- 'sometimes I really fany her, sometimes I can't stand to look at her' -- is something I at least found relatable and I think his confusion and being stuck in situations and miserable circumstances, that many people are/were, are what make him relatable. He's a flawed guy, all right, but a human one.

Thats basically Vic in a nutshell. He's a respectable and likeable character up to the point were he got Ingrid pregnant. Once this stage of the film passed Vic changed to the point of being almost the opposite of what he was before, but it can be said the unexpected pregnancy affected Vic's mindset. At least at the end it seemed that Vic would change back to his old self.

"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not".

Not a bad guy, just trapped in a bad situation. He was miserable, not mean.
