Filmed in which northern England city?

Hi all,

Just wondering whether anyone knows where this film was shot. Saw some big cooling towers in the background a few times.

Just curious. Thanks.

Hi,
Bolton and some villages nearby.
And what a counter-romantic handle you have :-) (no offense though)

Filmed in Preston, Bolton and Manchester also St Anne's On Sea (South Of Blackpool).

Are you sure parts were filmed in preston ? i noticed manchester, and southport in there.

The filming location of Ingrid's house is Heathland Road, Kersal. I live on that street.

No not Southport, even though it was the stated destination of the bus. I live in Southport and knew the seaside scenes were not my hometown. Another poster says it is St Annes on Sea, on the northern shore of the Ribble estuary. Southport is on the south side of said estuary.

Some scenes were filmed in Preston because the Miller Arcade still stands and there was a public convenience outside that has vanished. I believe some parts were filmed in Blackburn as well.

Its that man again!!

This is one of my favourite films and as I was born in Blackburn, have studied and worked in Preston and now live in Lytham St Annes, I am familiar with many of the wide variety of Lancashire locations used. I recognised many but those I didn't I have looked into since, so here goes. As another post here says, Ingrid's home is filmed in Kersal, Salford - the cooling towers would be Agecroft, I think. The factory where they worked was filmed at the old Mullard plant in Blackburn and the hospital where Ingrid loses the baby is the old Blackburn Royal Infirmary which closed in 2008 and is now in the process of being knocked down. Interiors as well as exteriors were shot there. The honeymoon scenes were shot on St Annes seafront, although Southport is clearly marked on the front of the bus taking them there. The scenes were filmed from inside the old Majestic Hotel on the seafront, which was knocked down in 1975, around the same time half of the pier which was a key image in the scenes was reduced by half because of fire. I am sure the hotel room interiors were done in a studio. Preston's Miller Arcade is featured prominently in a scene where Vic goes on a date with Ingrid and finds her friend there also. It also features later. Preston's flag market, with the Harris Museum and Art Gallery a feature, is the backdrop as the bus pulls up while Vic is sitting next to Ingrid on the way home from work - so they actually board the bus in Blackburn, it pulls up in Preston and they end up getting off in Salford! I am not sure where Vic's family home was filmed but Bolton is a possibility, as the football ground scenes were there, but apparently the church at the start of the film is in a district of Manchester called Beswick, close to where Man City's ground is now. I hope that helps - and enjoy the film. John Schlesinger was renowned for his imagery and he obviously chose his locations very carefully.

Thankyou; that was very helpful. I used to work next to the Miller's Arcade i n Preston and also close to Preston flag market and the Harris museum. I thought it all looked familiar, but could not quite place it, so thankyou. I now live in Southport and knew the beach scenes were not my home town. So it is St Annes, on the northern side of the Ribble estuary; Southport is on the south side, as its name suggests.
