I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE

This film. I first saw it late one night writing my master's thesis, too many years ago, and thus fell in love with 1) Alan Bates, and 2) English films from the 60's....particularly the "kitchen sink"/"Angry Young Man" genre, as this one is.

I accidentally bought the DVD in European format. I have YET to find this glorious gem in an American-formatted DVD. Does anyone know if Amazon has it available yet? I haven't found it.

GREAT little film, and Bates is a complete doll in it.

It isn't available on an American DVD, BUT it is available on Amazon Instant Video, which is how I just watched it. I agree, great film.

Have you tried playing the DVD on your computer?
My laptop plays both American and English DVDs.

My favourite Alan Bates films include Nothing But The Best, Women In Love, Far From The Madding Crowd, The Go-Between and The Mayor of Casterbridge. But there are many other fine films that he has made.

Playing it on computer also helps with DVDs from different regions.
In Australia DVD players will play both PAL and NTCS formats, but unless it's region or 4 or the *one size fits all* region 0 you could have problems.

I believe it's out on BluRay now

I just watched the blu-ray and the film looks tremendous on it. A beautiful restoration. The DVD was always a disappointment. Also, I have seen the film several times but there were details I had not remembered and I think the DVD had been censored (Vic's nudie magazine is on full view in one scene, and some "naughty" language). If you like this film the blu-ray is well worth owning. It includes interviews with film scholars, an audio interview with director John Schlesinger and his short film "Terminus" is also on the disc.
