Susan Hayward

Susan Hayward took over this film from her friend Ingrid Bergman.

I liked Susan Hayward in this movie. I thought she did a good job but, now that you mention it, I could also see Ingrid Bergman in this movie too. I think both actresses played tortured, troubled women well. However, Bergman was better being vulnerable; while Hayward's characters, whatever they were experiencing seemed to have an inner strength.

For those reasons, I could see Bergman more as the wife than the doctor. That role would, of course, have to be expanded if she were in it but that would make it a very different movie. Also, both Hayward and Bergman in the movie would be overkill. It seems to me the movie the way it is, is as it should be.

This is a favorite movie of mine. I first saw this movie back in 2000 and really liked it then. In the last few years, TCM has aired it at least once if not twice a year. I had dvd'ed from the TV but was lucky enough to buy it this year since it was more recently released on DVD. Susan was truly lovely in the movie, and I thought it was so cool that an actress of her caliber had a scene in a music store that featured music from the 1960's.
