How much $ to make this in 2008??

I doubt if it could be done with 500 million.

A good part of that amount would go just to assemble a comparable cast.

Hollywood doesn't have that many big stars any more. I wonder if MGM ever made their money back on this film -- I doubt it. I bet it lost money in the end, or maybe finally broke even after many years of TV showings.

Ticket prices for the Cinerama theatres were much higher than anywhere else, for the simple fact that the movies couldn't be shown in any other theatres during the initial run. It was at the Warner Hollywood for over a year. Still, it probably did lose money; I'd be interested to see figures for it.

Well, supposedly the film cost $15 million to make, most sources agree on that. What people don't seem to agree on is how much it made. A quick search led me to figures between $35 and $46.5 million domestically and around $50 million at the foreign box office. Apparently it was the highest grossing film of 62 so I guess it was a hit.
