Agreed. I bought the dvd because I like war movies and i like steve mcqueen it was worth it because the movie is great. I wonder why is this movie forgotten nowadays.

Hell is for Heroes was loosely remade by HBO in the late 90s as When Trumpets Fade. Set in the same time period, fall of 1944 during the Hurtgen Forest campaign, but different circumstances. There's a Reese-like character. I highly recommend it.

Due to it's low budget, TV like direction, being B&W and having a Leonard Rosenman score, it doesn't get the respect it deserves. It is almost like a motion picture length version of a Combat TV episode. Many people refuse to watch B&W because they aren't in color (bigots). I think that this does rate consideration for one of the 10 best WWII movies of all time. They did alot with what they had.

I agree. It is a great war movie and the cast was terric. And man those last two minutes are terrific!

reply

I couldn't agree more. I have watched this movie at least five times and the acting and action are first rate. McQueen is very underrated and the supporting cast is outstanding.

All in all, one of my top ten war flicks !

Add my vote to the tally.

I saw this as a kid, and it stuck with me. I think it was the first WWII movie I saw that made me realize the hellish reality of war. (If I was smarter, the title probably would have tipped me off.) In particular, the horrific scenes in which Henshaw trips a mine and Kolinsky is shot are very powerful.

Oh, my God! They're turkeys!

I remember watching this film with my late father for the first time when it was aired on television back in the mid-1960s. And my father, who had been a soldier in North Africa and Europe during World War II, expressed the opinion that "Hell is for Heroes" was an extremely realistic film in its portrayal of the fighting in the ETO.

In the film, you see that Steve McQueen has two ammunition clips taped together to his "grease" gun, with one taped clip loaded into the weapon and the other taped clip facing down from the gun. My father said that soldiers would also do that with a standard tommy gun, so that you could load the weapon even faster and return fire at the Germans and Italians more quickly.

And, how about that scene in which the bumbling Bob Newhart's rifle accidentally goes off and the shot whizzes by an obviously angered Steve McQueen? That was classic!

Incidentally, in his autobiography, Mr. Newhart related that he couldn't wait to get off of the set of "Hell is for Heroes," because he wanted to get back to Las Vegas and resume his growing and flourishing nightclub comedy career (which eventually lead onto tv sitcom greatness)!

YOU PEOPLE ARE CRAZY! One of the best ever ... top 10???

Using the IMDB rating system Band Of Brother is #1 (9.6) and this film is a 7.1 ... leaving 286 films in between. More so this film has little historical context or significance. Best thing about it was a decent (not great) cast and that is all.

reply

You're crazy! Why would a war film aficionado use the IMDb rating system? Don Siegel was a great director being a major influence On Clint Eastwood and resurrecting Sam Peckinpah's career. Check out Siegel's resume as he directed several classic films. "HIFH" has a star studded cast led by the icon of cool Steve McQueen in one of his best performances. The screenplay by Robert Pirosh was excellent and subsequently he pitched Selig Seligman on a TV series based on this script which became "Combat", one of the greatest TV series of all time. Siegel, even on a shoestring budget, made the battle scenes of his anti-war film much more realistic than viewers of the early sixties were accustomed to with his use of blood and the sounds of the agonies of dying men.

Regarding "Band of Brothers", Stephen Ambrose is a discredited historian and being a Baby Boomer, Tom Hanks has some strange ideas "The Assassination of President Kennedy, "Parkland", "Charlie Wilson's War" (pure fiction), to name a few.

Perhaps I am ... but I provided metrics ... and you did not. And please note that I mentioned the cast ... although I am not as enamored as you are. Finally, love the T Hanks boomer comment. Is this something all boomers possess ... this "strange idea" syndrome?

Now do use a favor and rank you fav 20 WW2 films so we can see where the difference between you and IMDB 7.1's

reply

"Metrics", as they relate to rating movies, are subjective. One "strange idea" us Boomers have is "gimme some truth" which was provided to you in the previous post. Now, if a favor is indeed owed, ponder a bit and you should realize the onus is on you.

I love how this movie shows the futility and wastefulness of war without getting all sappy or preachy about it.

I've been chasing grace/ But grace ain't easy to find
