Age Difference?

Love John Wayne but what were they thinking to cast Elsa Martinelli as his "love interest?" She looks young enough to be his grand-daughter. Thought that aspect of the movie was ridiculous!

reply

Not me. I loved it. Elsa was so gorgeous, I want to hit that, and I'm 58.

Wayne was about 27 and a half years than the Elsa Marinelli (still with us at age 80).

An implausible romance? Yes, absolutely. But not so unusual in many films where the leading man is on the sunny side of fifty.

At any rate, the romance wasn't emphasized, which is just as well. At any rate, Ms Martinelli and Michele Girardon provided ample eye candy.

Not so ridiculous. Lots of women like old guys. Mostly if all the 'young' guys they are meeting are *beep* (and that, apparently, is a pretty common problem for women).

Besides, we're talking 2 ppl out in the middle of Safari surrounded by wild animals & silly ppl. Might as well be 2 ppl living on the moon... should they not hook up if they're there?

No more ridiculous than Hawks casting 19-year-old Lauren Bacall as 45-year-old Humphrey Bogart's love interest in To Have and Have Not.

"Who's running this airline?!"

reply

Well, they did end of getting married in "real life."

Unless he and his child became parents around the age of thirteen, he'd never be her grandfather. It's not unrealistic. Is it what happens most often? No, but it certainly happens. Two kindreds find each other, age becomes irrelevant. Pockets was almost twenty years older than Brandy, so Sean and Dallas weren't the only couple with more than ten years age difference in the film.

*thinks out loud* Would be great in a sequel to have seen Chips, Louis, The Indian, or Kurt to bring their loves into the business, and see who they ended up with.

They did that a lot back in the day. John Wayne was no exception. Charlene Holt (yowza) in El Dorado. Angie Dickinson (yowza x2) in Rio Bravo. Seemed to be normal back then.

Wayne was fifty-three during filming and Martinelli was twenty-six. Such pairings do happen in real life, but usually when the man is wealthy. In movies romantic relationships with wide age gaps are much more commonplace. Since the character Martinelli was playing had no problem being involved with a man twice her age, I'll suspend my disbelief and I won't have a problem with it, either.
