Maybe the Greatest Movie Ever

I've seen many, many movies. Almost all of them on the Top 250 plus multitudes of others of every genre. I wouldn't say I'm some expert on movies I just like them a lot. That being said, this is perhaps the greatest movie I've ever seen. I was so engaged in the story telling that the fact that there really isn't much action didn't even occur to me. I would put this movie up there with Ran, Das Boot, The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Taxi Driver, Amadeus, Rear Window and 12 Angry Men on my top list of greats. Just a magnificent movie.

I think pretty much the same. Before I watched this movie,I thought the best movie I've ever seen was either 12 Angry Men or Full Metal Jacket. But this, for me,tops everything I've seen before.

reply

Definitely up there at the top.

reply

Hands down it's the greatest movie ever made.

reply

it's up there, the storytelling is just magnificent

so many movies, so little time

I think its an excellent film but dragged a bit in the middle when Tsugumo was recounting the travails of his daughter, son-in-law and grandson in detail. I also thought the swordplay was a bit lacking by comparison to, say, Sword of Doom.

reply

It's a very good film, but not one of the greatest of all time, in my opinion.

It is an amazing film - the black and white cinematography, the usage of its sparse music, the mis-en- scene. When you consider that most of the film is just people sitting very still and talking, and yet the film NEVER looks boring, you can understand the mastery of this director’s craft.

I highly recommend this film to anyone who loves old-style filmmaking at its finest.

I don't know about the greatest movie ever, but I've always thought it was the best Samurai movie I've ever seen. Against the reputation and popularity of Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune that shows it is an even better movie than people think.

The story and its telling are great, and I liked the movie very much, but it is not a seminal film.

A rare 10/10 for me.
