A Few Questions
Was it really three sacks of grain to the local "lord" and one to the shop, or did I misunderstand that bit?
Any idea what the boy likely died from?
Why did they pack the grave with wood? Added preservation?

I'm not a doctor but for some reason I always thought his sickness was encephalitis.
shareSeems like a good theory: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Japanese-encephalitis/Pages/Causes.aspx
shareI just saw this last night and according to the person who presented it, who is a Japanese woman who was about 8 when this was released, she says the child most likely dies from cholera. You can read about cholera here :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cholera
She said the dirty drinking water that were using most likely was the cause.
Interesting, thanks. I'm definitely not going to take sanitation for granted today.
