water pail

I don't understand why the poor woman was made to bring 2 full pails of water everytime. They had 4 pails, if the man had gone down to fill the 2 pails, the woman in turn could use that to water the crops while the man uses the other 2 empty pails to get more water. By the time he comes up, she had watered what was remaining of her 2 pails & could've continued on with the newly filled pails he had. Her job could be to tend to the field while his was to get more water - why was this not attempted?

Also this is Japan, it's not the desert, they could've kept a huge reservoir to fill up & used the humidity to collect more water. The people of our rural areas in my country do those things, even the isolated families, so why couldn't they. No fancy technology either.

Seems like the movie is supposed to be symbolic--don't think anybody lives like this. But if the woman can carry the water why shouldn't she? Doing the easy work and sitting around waiting for water while the old man continuously does back-breaking labor isn't fair or even practical. Would make more sense for both of them to be constantly hauling water while the kids take care of the plants
