In DESPERATE need of a remake.... Ideas!

I have to say, I was a little disappointed with this and the Disney version (although Midler was VVG). I think this deserves an update.... What do we think of Catherine Zeta Jones as Mama Rose in a few years?

What the hell's wrong with expressing yourself?

CZJ is also my current pick for Rose, because she can sing and if she's ever given a good performance it's in bitch roles. That's a big if! But you don't have to wait a few years, Rose is traditionally played by an older woman, but the real-life Rose was quite young during these events (she had her daughters at age 16 and 18). A movie Rose should be young enough to believably have little daughters.

I'm thinking Anne Hathaway for Gypsy, IF she can sing better than she did at the Oscars. She has kind of an odd face, so she can look pretty or awkward, and her body is right. She's almost as tall as the real Gypsy, and she's both slender and shapely. A good costumer could make her look like a skinny, gawky, sexless girl, and then reveal a spectacular figure in the 3rd act.

Gypsy does NOT need another remake. And after all the recent revivals, it shouldn't even be on Broadway again for at LEAST 20 years. We've been Gypsy'd to death!

If it gets a "remake", it should be a more dramatic and realistic version of the tale. The musical has been done to death and there is a great story underneath. Also, the story could focus more on:

1) How much they really did struggle during the decline of vaudeville. Their struggle is shown "cute musical" style not a realistic version.
2) Run parallel stories of June and Gypsy after June runs off. June was quite successful in her own career.
3) Don't sugar coat how down stripping was looked at in 30's and 40's.

Forget a remake, go see the stage show, it's better anyway.

Madonna and Lourdes. (Am I being sarcastic?)

Anne Hathaway would make a great Louise. And since this is 2011, have Gypsy take it all off in her final strip. And yes Gypsy Rose Lee did strip completely naked a few times. It was rare but it happened. She once uttered the famous line after a raid: "I wasn't totally naked. I was wearing a spotlight!"

Ugh. But Cher already played in Burlesque and I think Portman would make a GREAT Gypsy. I don't like Anne Hathaway, I think she would make the film cheesy. I'm already disappointed with her role as Catwoman in the upcoming Dark Knight film.

Roz Russell and Natalie Wood were incredible in this production! Why does Hollywood even do remakes? I have yet to see a worthy one.

reply

Totally agree with what you are saying. It ain't broken so lets not fix it!

Hold on! It WAS remade. Didn't anyone see the 19913 TV version with Bette Midler and Peter Riegert?

"May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"

It doesn't need a remake at all. Nobody would see it. Maybe it's better on Broadway, but the movie was lackluster with mostly forgettable songs, incredibly corny dialogue, one of the few times Roz Russell overacted badly, and very few likeable characters. Natalie Wood as eye candy is the highlight.

Here's a remake I saw recently (yes, it's a friend's film):

It's a very funny, very twisted modern-day take on the story. Check it out:
