The Three Strippers

Where this is a Classic Musical of Stage and Movies. For me the enjoyment ended when the Three Strippers did their Number teaching Gypsy Rose Lee the Tricks of the Trade. Why were they so Loud. It Spoiled a otherwise Fine song in the Movie.

I think the strippers sang so loudly because they're supposed to be noisy, brassy, tasteless women, for whom volume means power.

Exactly, and Faith Dane as Mazeppa is priceless!

I can see your point. Just thought they played it over the top. But yea to your point they are suppose to be Brassie and Tasteless so they worked out great.

The Warner Bros. sound department just loved that loud, brassy, echo-ey sound. Everything that came out of that studio in the classic era sounded like their Bugs Bunny cartoons: very loud and bright. Even the dialogue in Life with Father and The Man Who Came to Dinner sounds like it is bouncing off the far walls of an amphitheater.

The money is quickly spent but the shame remains.

I was particularly impressed by Tessie and Electra sitting so patiently, waiting their turns, as Mazeppa did her "thing".

I would imagine the three each trying to upstage one another.

Notice that the lights go down during this number to emphasize the three strippers - GYPSY, like the later MY FAIR LADY, was rooted to the sound-stage.

I've seen every single production of "Gypsy"--except for Merman. All, including Tyne Daly and Linda Lavin. I've never seen another Gypsy as well-performed as Natalie Wood, and the three screen strippers were always, in my opinion, superior to any stage version.

And yes, I thought Roz was terrif, even if SOME of her numbers--or portions of her numbers--were dubbed.

I liked Bernadette Peters--the sexiest Mama Rose. And Angela was pretty good too, if not quite as dynamic as some of the others. I pass on Midler. Too much mugging and eye-popping. (Her big failing as a dramatic actress, with one glorious exception--"The Rose.") But lots of people loved Bette's performance.
